Preparations for Lakshmi Pujan 2025
Cleaning the House
Goddess Lakshmi only enters a clean and sacred home. Therefore, it is very important to thoroughly clean the house before Diwali. Every corner of the house should be free of dust and dirt. Doors and windows should be washed and decorated so that the environment becomes pure and attractive. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi resides permanently in a clean house.
Decoration
The house is decorated not only with rangoli, diyas, and flowers, but also with torans, garlands, and lanterns. Creating a beautiful rangoli at the entrance and placing diyas around it is considered auspicious. Rows of diyas, electric lights, and fragrant incense sticks make the environment divine and holy.
Preparing the Altar (Chowki)
Place idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi on a chowki covered with red or yellow cloth. First, bathe the idols with pure water and Ganga jal, then dress them in new clothes. Adorn them with flower garlands, ornaments, cosmetic items, and fragrant sandalwood paste. Draw a Swastika with rice grains (akshat) and roli on the chowki, which is considered highly auspicious.
Ganapati Sthapana
On a betel leaf, place turmeric root, betel nut, dried dates, almonds, some rice grains, durva grass, and turmeric-kumkum. Then place the idol of Lord Ganesha on it.
Kalash Sthapana
Fill a kalash with water, betel nut, coins, betel leaves, or mango leaves, and place a coconut on top. Tie the kalash with a sacred thread (mouli), as this is considered highly auspicious.
Butale and Batase
According to tradition, five butale (small earthen pots) are taken for Lakshmi Puja. These are filled with puffed rice (lai/khil). A sugar drop (batasha) is placed on top of each pot, and they are arranged in front of the kalash and idols at the puja place. During the puja, these are offered to the deities along with flowers, rice, and water while chanting mantras. After the puja, these butale and batase are distributed as prasad among family members, children, and guests. It is believed that consuming this prasad brings prosperity, good fortune, and lasting happiness in the family.
Fruits
During puja, fruits like pomegranate, apple, banana, and coconut are offered in front of the kalash and idols. These symbolize prosperity and health.
Sweets and Dry Fruits
Sweets, fox nuts (makhana), and dry fruits are also offered during puja. These are first offered to Goddess Lakshmi as bhog and then distributed as prasad.
After the Puja
The butale, batase, fruits, and sweets offered during puja are distributed as prasad among everyone, symbolizing the sharing of prosperity, good fortune, and happiness in society and family.
