The Story of Shattila Ekadashi

According to ancient scriptures, there once lived an elderly Brahmani in a small town. Although she was deeply devoted to fasting and performing prayers, she was not inclined to offer food or charity to others. Over time, her devotion purified her soul, but her reluctance to give alms left her spiritual journey incomplete. Charity, as she would later learn, plays a vital role in attaining true spiritual fulfillment.

One day, Lord Vishnu decided to test the Brahmani’s devotion and came to her cottage disguised as a mendicant. When He asked for alms, the Brahmani, hesitant to part with her resources, gave Him a lump of clay instead of food. Lord Vishnu accepted her offering and left.

After some time, the Brahmani passed away and ascended to the heavenly abode. To her surprise, her celestial home lacked basic necessities like food and other comforts. Troubled, she sought Lord Vishnu’s guidance. When she asked why her heavenly abode was barren despite her devotion, the Lord explained that while her prayers and fasting were commendable, her lack of generosity had left her blessings incomplete.

Realizing her mistake, the Brahmani learned about the significance of Shattila Ekadashi and the importance of charity. She performed the Shattila Ekadashi vrat with utmost devotion, following the rituals as guided by celestial beings. As a result, her heavenly abode transformed into a place of abundance, filled with food, wealth, and prosperity.
