Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, will be celebrated on October 29, 2024, marking the beginning of the Diwali festivities. This significant Hindu festival is observed two days before Diwali.
Dhanteras is one of the important Hindu festivals celebrated with enthusiasm and joy across the country. On this auspicious day, people worship Lord Kuber, Lord Dhanvantari, and Goddess Lakshmi. Lamps and candles are lit outside homes. Every year, Dhanteras is celebrated two days before Diwali, according to the Hindu calendar, on the thirteenth day of the Kartika month’s Krishna Paksha. This year, Dhantrayodashi falls on October 29, 2024. It is also considered auspicious to buy new utensils, gold, and silver jewelry on Dhanteras.

Dhanteras Puja Vidhi
On the evening of Dhanteras, Lord Kuber and Lord Dhanvantari should be established facing the north direction. Light a ghee lamp with one wick in front of each deity. During the puja, chant “ॐ ह्रीं कुबेराय नमः”. After this, recite the “Dhanvantari Stotra”. After the puja, place Kuber in the wealth area and Dhanvantari in the prayer area on Diwali.
Importance of Deepdan on Dhanteras
Deepdan is performed on Dhanteras. It is believed that performing deepdan for Yamaraj on Dhanteras prevents untimely death. In the evening, 13 lamps should be lit at the main entrance and 13 inside the house. The main lamp is lit at bedtime, facing south, as the south is considered the direction of Yama. This ritual removes all negative energy from the house.
Mythological Story of Dhanteras
According to a mythological story, Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the churning of the ocean on the thirteenth day of Kartika Krishna Paksha, holding a pot of amrit (nectar) in his hands. Since then, Dhanteras has been celebrated. On this day, there is also a tradition of buying utensils, which brings prosperity, wealth, and health. The deity of wealth, Kuber, is worshipped with proper rituals on Dhanteras.
